Our story

After 13 years together, Kieran proposed in January and we eagerly set about planning our winter wedding. Having been to over 30 weddings in three years, and with Carolyn working for the company behind three of the UK’s leading wedding media brands, we had a good idea of what we wanted for our big day. And we thought we had a realistic idea of how much it would cost us.

Oh, how wrong we were! With a vision in mind of saying our vows in a room that was flooded with soft candle light, we started looking into options for hiring lanterns and candlestick holders. It soon became clear that it’s eye-wateringly expensive to hire lanterns of any shape or size, and it was near-on impossible to hire them in the quantities we were after.

So we decided to take a punt and buy our own. We ordered a number of high-quality polished stainless steel and glass lanterns in a range of three different sizes. We also sourced all manner of mercury glass candle stick holders, votives and glass bauble tealight holders to add to the effect.

Keen, as many couples are to add a personal touch to our big day, we also embarked on a number of DIY projects. Kieran runs a laser engraving and custom flip flop business, so a comfortable change of footwear for our evening guests was a given. But we also screen printed our own invitations and used his laser engraver to create wooden place settings for all our guests and personalised cocktail stirrers for when the party got going in the evening.

When our lanterns arrived we were absolutely delighted with the quality and the beautiful, classic style. And even more so when we dressed our venue the day before our wedding. We placed lanterns down the aisle, had them in clusters by fireplaces and on staircases and grouped 30 lanterns together to create a striking entrance to our reception venue. We used pillar candles in our lanterns, but the simplicity of their design means that they would look equally stunning filled with fairy lights, foliage or flowers. The possibilities are endless.

Soon after our wedding we decided that we wanted to make our lanterns and decorative accessories available to other couples. While we couldn’t have been happier with the end result, it’s safe to say that we would have saved a lot of both time and money if we’d been able to hire these items rather than source them ourselves. We now know all too well how expensive weddings can be, and we’d love to help other couples to decorate their venues at a fraction of the cost.

And so, Illuminer was born.

On our website you’ll find a range of decorative accessories that are available to hire, as well as bespoke items to buy that will be made exactly to your specifications. We hope you’ll find all of the information that you need on these pages, but if you have any questions then please drop us a line at contact@illuminer.co.uk.
